When most people work on a puzzle, they try to fit the pieces together to find a solution. Devon Lougheed, the “Andy Kaufman of the Canadian music scene” (Discorder Magazine), takes a different approach: “I love creating puzzles. I love building mazes both conceptual and real in the music, then journeying with the audience towards a solution. Maybe this back-and-forth between puzzling and un-puzzling is what makes me distinct, a little weird maybe, but still really entertaining and
enjoyable” (Georgia Straight).
As a musician, Devon brings this love of puzzles, games, and audience interaction to every act with which he plays. He has toured internationally as an integral multi-instrumental piece of JUNO-award-nominated Hey Ocean!, top-30-on-Billboard radio-rockers Smashing Satellites, 90s throwback grungsters Altered By Mom, new Canadiana icon Skye Wallace, and Oji-Cree singer-songwriter Aysanabee. He has played, sung, and danced his way across stages in North America, the UK, Europe, Eastern Europe, and Australia at festivals like SXSW, Reeperbahn, Louder Than Life, Talinn Music Week, and Revolution Rock.
In the studio, Devon is an avid writer, and has written with artists such as Nigel Pulsford of BUSH, The Lowest of the Low, Cassie Da Silva, Terra Lightfoot, Roddy Colmer, Jules, Cinzia, Parker Bossley, roboteyes, THNDR, and more. His tune “Gamblin’ Man” (Smashing Satellites) cracked the Billboard top 30 Active Rock charts. In addition, as a composer, he has written and produced music for the upcoming Crave comedy series The Desert, Something Undone on CBC Gem, and placed songs in shows like Kim’s Convenience (CBC) and Motive (CTV) and in indie movies Highway 13 and Connections in the Dark. He has also scored three independent shorts and commercials for Kentucky Fried Chicken, Shopify, Sunwing Airlines, Family Channel, ScholarsEd, Little Canada and more.
As a songwriter, Devon begins the process with a puzzle, but as a producer, he ends it with a polished radio-ready piece. His first full album as producer was beekeeper’s 2010 debut BE KEPT, which presented the band’s math rock/psychedelic/indie pop as radio-ready gems, enabling them to chart across Canadian campus radio and on CBC Radio 3. Fast forward to today and his co-writes with and productions for Skye Wallace, Bad Pop, and Jules release are in high rotation on BBC1, BBC6, CBC, The Verge on SiriusXM, Indie 88, and The Edge 102.1. Current production clients include Ron Hawkins (The Lowest of the Low), Teagan Johnston, Nefe, Goodnight Sunrise, Frank Moyo, The Bare Minimum, Waves That Stray, Yoo Do Right, Roddy Colmer, Joe Thistel, THNDR, and an ever- growing roster of contemporary hitmakers.
