As lead singer for the gold and platinum-selling band The Watchmen, Daniel Greaves admits he didn’t get a lot of opportunities to play the piano. That changed seven years ago with his purchase of Toronto’s Motel Bar. The venue, profiled recently in the Sunday New York Times, came complete with an old piano.

“So I started playing it in the afternoon,” says Greaves, who began playing at the age of eight in his hometown of Winnipeg. “It eventually turned into an hour’s worth of material.”

When not appearing with The Watchmen – who recently celebrated 30 years together – or cheering on his beloved Winnipeg Jets, Greaves performs his new solo act in Canada and the U.S.. Using only piano and voice, the intimate shows offer up a mix of new songs, covers, and Watchmen classics. A stint last year at New York City’s Rockwood Music Hall led to the live EP “Motel Sessions”.
