Biography:

A versatile musician, violinist Jeongah Choi has enjoyed performing as a soloist, chamber music member, and orchestral player in major countries around the world, including South Korea, Austria, Canada, and the United States of America.

As an active chamber musician, Ms. Choi appreciates collaboration with various artists and relishes every opportunity to play in an ensemble. She founded several quartets with her beloved friends, including the Varick String Quartet and the Con Spirito String Quartet. Her versatility in chamber music repertoire is evident in her recent performance programs, highlighting everything from more traditional works by Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to more modern pieces by Béla Bartók and Luciano Berio. Ms. Choi thrives on learning and bringing contemporary pieces to life by giving premiere performances. Her premiere performances include Adam Zolty’s Toys, Elizabeth Maconchy’s String Quartet No. 3, and Sylvie Bodorová’s Silymabum for String Quartet.

As a solo performer, Ms. Choi enjoys delivering a wide range of repertoire, which is well observed from her graduation recital held at Roy Barnett Recital Hall, BC, Canada, in 2019, featuring works by J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Paganini, Tomaso Antonio Vitali, as well as Bartók and Augusta Read Thomas. Her commitment and love for sharing the exceptional beauty of classical music are the driving forces behind her solo performances.

As a teaching artist, Ms. Choi demonstrated her notable passion for teaching while serving at the Music Box Academy and the Connection Academy, both located in Vancouver, BC, Canada. She worked with students who were at various playing levels and assisted them in reaching their highest potential by providing weekly lessons and seasonal masterclasses. Her pedagogical interest never fails to pique her inherent curiosity and quest for improvement.

As an orchestral player, Ms. Choi appeared as concertmaster and principal second violin in the major orchestral repertoire, including Scheherazade and La Mer. Her extraordinary leadership as a concertmaster was well represented at the Canadian premiere performance and recording of John Luther Adams’ “A Northern Suite.”

Ms. Choi began her violin studies in 2002 and quickly discovered a love for music and her instrument. She then enrolled in the Sunhwa Arts Middle and High Schools, where she gained fundamental musical understanding and knowledge as well as a sense of musicianship and stage presence through extensive solo, chamber, and orchestral performance experiences. She was the concerto competition winner in her graduation year and had the privilege of performing with the Sunhwa Symphony Orchestra.

Ms. Choi earned her master’s degree in music at the Juilliard School under the tutelage of Joel Smirnoff and Hyo Kang, a bachelor’s degree from the University of British Columbia under the tutelage of Corey Cerovsek and Jasper Wood, and a performance diploma from Douglas College under the tutelage of Angela Cavadas. She was invited to perform at the Baccalaureate Concert at the University of British Columbia and at the Awards Benefit Concert with the Douglas Concert Band. She currently studies with Barry Shiffman and Erika Raum at the Glenn Gould Royal Conservatory of Music.

Ms. Choi is a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society and the recipient of the Temerty Foundation Endowment, Juilliard Scholarships, an International Student Scholarship, a Dena Wosk Scholarship in Music, an Outstanding International Student Award, and a Mildred Johnson Scholarship from the University of British Columbia.
