Alexa Belgrave is a pianist, musical director and community member based in Toronto with a B.Mus in Jazz Piano from UofT (June 2018).  With a background in classical studies (completed her ARCT in 2014), an interest in composition and an interactive and rhythmic ‘comping style, Alexa has created and collaborated with  multiple projects in different idioms, from jazz to disco – with groups such as TUSH and Queer Songbook Orchestra – and musical theatre. Her musical director experience includes Obsidians Playwright showcase 2018/2019, Musical Stage Company’s One Song Glory program in 2018, ’20 and ’21, Stratfords Directors workshop program in 2021 and most recently Sheridans First Drafts – Parkdale podcast in 2022 and Nightwood theatre’s Lawyer show presentation of ‘The World Goes Round’ . Of her own projects, she was selected and showcased in the Burdock Piano festival in January 2019 with both her trio and duo and awarded a special project grant for her R&B/Jazz collective Moodset from the TD Discovery series in 2019.  Most recently Alexa was the pianist for Confluence Concerts presentation of Nina Simone along with Andrew Downing and Shakura S’Aida in January of 2022 as well as Confluence’s September 2020 online concert celebrating the works of composer Billy Strayhorn.  You can hear her on keys throughout Tush’s debut album “FANTAST”, released in July 2021 as well as the Cy Young’s 2020 EP ‘Wakeup Call’. She is currently teaching Musical Theatre Performance at Sheridan College and piano at the Annex Academy of Music and Mayfield Secondary School of the Arts as well as freelancing around the GTA in various musical roles.
