Biography:

Chia-Yu Hsu,
Bassoonist/Lecturer/Piano Instructor/Music Arranger

Chia-Yu Hsu, a native of Taiwan, is the newly appointed principal bassoon at the National Ballet of Canada and was invited to give a lecture on “Marcel Bitsch’s Music for Bassoon—A Performance Guide on Alternative Fingerings and Reed Modifications” in the International Double Reed Society symposium in July 2021. They served as principal bassoon at Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra prior to coming to Canada and is currently pursuing the Artist Diploma Program at the Royal Conservatory of Music (Glenn Gould School) under the tutelage of Glenn Einschlag. Chia-Yu’s professional orchestral experiences include the National Art Centre Orchestra, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Illinois Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony in Miami, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, and Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. As an experienced soloist, Chia-Yu was selected by Zubin Mehta to perform Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto, KV191 in Charles Bronfman Auditorium in Tel Aviv under his baton in 2015. Chia-Yu earned a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in bassoon performance at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2019.
