Julie Mahendran is a soul-jazz artist and freelance vocalist currently based in Toronto. Born in Montreal and raised in Edmonton, she is the musical black sheep of a family with an unusual mix of French-Canadian and Tamil heritage. Though rooted in classical technique, Julie’s clear, powerful and expressive voice reflects musical influences from pop to soul, funk, and jazz- she is equally at home with a soaring melody as she is scatting vocalese. In addition to studying with the likes of Cheryl Bentyne (Manhattan Transfer) at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Julie also attended Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton. Her love affair with big city energy has taken her to London and New York, as well as Hong Kong where she held a summer residency as the featured vocalist at the Four Seasons Hotel. As a freelance vocalist, Julie performs classic rock repertoire around North America with Classic Albums Live. She also performs in and around Toronto Canada with various tributes to the music of Fleetwood Mac and Johnny Cash, as well as with various event and wedding bands including Grooveyard and Supersonic Hearts.
