John Gittins
July 4, 1936 — October 31, 2024
John Gittins’ love of jazz began at an early age, often playing in clubs before he was old enough to visit them as a patron. After completing his BA at the University of British Columbia, John went to Harvard University on a full scholarship. He then earned his MA from Brandeis University and studied for his PhD at the University of Chicago. In Chicago, he led the John Gittins Trio and played at many legendary jazz clubs in the area. In 1970, John accepted a professorship at York University, moving into a cross-appointment between the Social Studies and Music departments. John taught Jazz Theory and ran the university’s Jazz program, as well as playing jobs with many fine musicians in Toronto and the surrounding area.
John passed peacefully at Southlake Regional Health Centre on Thursday, October 31, 2024 at the age of 88. Loving husband of Ailsa Gittins. Beloved father of Crane Gittins (Cindy) and Erica Rodriguez. Cherished grandfather of Spencer, Claire and Xander. He will be dearly missed by his friends and family.
A special thank you to the kind staff at Southlake for their care during his time of need.
In memory of John, donations made to Southlake Regional Health Centre would be appreciated.
