Biography:

Thomas Goerz, bass-baritone, is recognized as one of the foremost “singer/actors” that Canada has ever produced. He was part of the Original Canadian Cast of LES MISERABLES in 1989 at the Royal Alex where he sang the role of Inspector Javert to critical and public acclaim. Thomas has performed opera roles in every Canadian Province and with every major Canadian Opera Company. He made his American debut with Washington Opera (Kennedy Centre) as Robin Oakapple in their hit production of RUDDIGORE. At Cincinnati Opera he was Papageno in Mozart’s DIE ZAUBERFLOTE. In Canada Mr. Goerz has sung the role of Owen Hart in Jake Heggie’s DEAD MAN WALKING three times – in Montreal, Calgary, and Vancouver – again to great critical and public acclaim. Favourite roles include Bottom in Britten’s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM (Banff Summer Festival), Bartolo in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO (Vancouver, Calgary, Pacific Opera – Victoria), Bartolo in THE BARBER OF SEVILLE (Vancouver, Kansas City, Regina), and Zuniga in Bizet’s CARMEN (Vancouver, Edmonton, Opera Lyra – Ottawa). Thomas covered the role of Sergeant Sulpice in LA FILLE DU REGIMENT on three separate occasions at New York’s Metropolitan Opera. At the Canadian Opera Company Mr. Goerz sang the role of Lord Rochefort opposite the ANNA BOLENA of Sondra Radvanovsky. A singer of great musical ability, Thomas sang the daunting role of “mad King George” in EIGHT SONGS FOR A MAD KING, fully staged without a conductor, at The Banff Summer Festival, and the Stratford Festival (Tom Patterson Theatre). In THE MIKADO, Thomas’s favourite G&S operetta, he has performed POOH BAH (Edmonton, Arizona Opera, Guelph Spring Festival), THE MIKADO (Calgary, Virginia Opera), and over 200 performances of PISH TUSH at the Stratford Festival. Mr. Goerz was also Monsieur Firmin in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA on the Canadian tour to Singapore and Hong Kong. As soon as COVID restrictions are released, Mr. Goerz will appear in the Pacific Opera production of DON GIOVANNI as The Commendatore.
