Biography:

One of Canada’s most celebrated film and television composers, producers and arrangers, John Welsman is a two-time Canadian Screen Award recipient for Best Original Score, a five-time Gemini Award recipient (and thirteen-time nominee), and the winner of the Genie Award for Achievement in Music for Nurse Fighter Boy.

His extensive credits include the TV series Road to Avonlea, Franklin and Friends, The Mighty Jungle, My Friend Rabbit, The Twilight Zone, and the TV movies Stolen Miracle, Murder Most Likely, and Borrowed Hearts. Documentary films include James Cameron and Simcha Jacobivici’s The Lost Tomb Of Jesus, West Wind – The Vision of Tom Thomson, Tales from the Organ Trade, and David Suzuki’s The Sacred Balance. His recent dramatic feature films include Beyond What Remains, Nurse Fighter Boy, MODRA, and A Winter Tale. In total, he has 10 theatrical features, 14 movies for television, 14 television series and over 50 documentaries to his name.

John began his career as a singer-songwriter who recorded with artists Laura Smith, Available Space, Jane Siberry, and Cherie Camp. Later he would arrange for internationally renowned recording artists The Canadian Tenors with Sarah McLachlan (The Perfect Gift), Loreena McKennitt (An Ancient Muse, and The Mask And Mirror), Stephanie Hardy (Brand New Skin), and Allanah Myles (I Believe). He co-wrote with Cherie Camp and recorded the self-titled WEA album “Cherie Camp” (produced by Gene Martynec). And Welsman and Camp won the 2009 Genie Award for Achievement in Music – Original Song with “Oh Love” (Nurse Fighter Boy).

John also composed music for the Ontario Tourism campaign from 1996-2002. And he was commissioned to compose and arrange for the short film Ontario Our Majesty, a gift to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, in honour of her 2002 Jubilee visit to Ontario.

Recently, he has worked on the acclaimed, award-winning documentaries West Wind: The Vision of Tom Thomson, and Ric Esther Bienstock’s Tales From the Organ Trade.

In 2015, John was elected President of the The Screen Composers Guild of Canada (SCGC). He resides in and works from his home town of Toronto.
