Canadian cellist CHRISTOPHER HWANG is a dynamic, profound young artist who has performed extensively as soloist and chamber musician across North America and Asia.

Most recently, Mr Hwang was selected to compete in finals in the Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition, solely focused in Canadian and contemporary music and will get the opportunity to commission a new work by Ian Cusson this fall of 2021.

Mr. Hwang is also a laureate of numerous competitions, including the Tecchler and Forster Cello Competition, which resulted in a generous loan of a William Forster cello, Yale Chamber Competition and the Canadian Music Competition. In addition, Mr Hwang has appeared as soloist with the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Kitchener-Waterloo Youth Orchestra, CAST Orchestra and the Yale Baroque Ensemble in halls such as Sprague Memorial Hall, McMillan Theatre, Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts and the Centre In The Square.

As a chamber musician, Mr. Hwang has been active in many chamber ensembles working alongside with the Tokyo String Quartet, Borromeo String Quartet, Ebene String Quartet, Emerson string quartet and the St. Lawrence String Quartet. Chamber Highlights include performing at the Yale club of Taipei, Luminato Festival, Yale Cello Ensemble and winner of the Felix Galimir Award.

Mr. Hwang has appeared in International summer music festivals including the Banff’s centre’s Chamber Residency, Masterclass and Orchestra seminar, Great Mountains Festival, Toronto Summer Music Festival and Morningside Music Bridge, working alongside with Janos Starker, Steven Isserlis, Gary Hoffman, Jian Wang and among others.

Mr Hwang has studied at the New England Conservatory with Laurence Lesser and Lluis Claret, graduate of Yale University under the tutelage of Aldo Parisot and the University of Toronto with Shauna Rolston. Past teachers include David Hetherington and Paul Pulford.

Mr. Hwang is passionate in teaching and has his own studio based in Toronto and is a frequent guest artist giving cello masterclass at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music. He plays on a 1929 Carlo Giuseppe Oddone generously loaned by the Canada Council of the Arts in winning the 2023 Instrument Bank Competition.
